I saw recently the movie: “the menu” on Disney+, it’s one of that movie that initially make me feel like: “I wasted my time looking that” this in particular because in the first time I was thinking that I will see a lot of high level dish but the movie became more dark after each minutes. So in the first place I was disappointed by that but I couldn’t stop thinking about that and at the end they were right.

In the movie there is this top chef that invested with an other person all money to buy an island, in that place he will open a restaurant that will serve only food from the island a real km0.

This high end restaurant will become so popular that people pay 2000-3000$ to go to the island and have dinner in this price u have a dinner of course, a flight by plane and a private tour of the islands (at the end the price seems reasonable).

During the dinner the food bring back dark moment of the chef’s life, suicide, abuse, blackmail, cheating and survival moment. On this island during the dinners there is a girl that wasn’t on the list she is the only one that don’t appreciate the food and a lot of time eat only a bite of it, the top chef ask everyone about her but none have idea about who she is, that made more mad the chef that try to figure out her identity and why she don’t eat anything. Food in this movie is used for different messages the first is a a critical point of view about gastronomic journalists, the other messages is that food should always have a soul, food could save ur life and we should cook only what’s make us happy. actually I would like to write more about it but I don’t want to spoiler anything.

Wow Laura - I hadn't heard of this film and now, after reading your enlightening comment and more about it online, I'm wondering whether I'm brave enough to watch it! The issue at the heart of it is whether high-end food has become so revered but so disconnected from what people really like to eat - and whether the joy of a chef has also been lost along the way. As you say, food should have soul. It has a purpose - that of sustaining us, providing nutrients for life. The process of cooking makes me happy - and even if I'm cooking for just for myself I want it to taste as good as I can make it... even if it's just a simple boiled egg and soldiers. I think this is what had become completely lost in the lives of the billionaires in Succession. Food was used in so many different ways that had nothing to do with nourishment or pleasure. It sounds like this theme is explored in a much darker way in 'The Menu'. Thanks for sharing you views on this. Fascinating. Have you ever eaten food that has style over substance?
